My Story

Hello and welcome to Maggie’s Kitchen, where wholesome home cooking abounds and the secret ingredient is A Little Bit of Love. I’m Maggie, I love to cook and I’m really passionate about good nutrition. This is just a space for me to write about the joy and benefits of home cooking and some other things that are close to my heart. I also like taking photographs but unfortunately I don't have the right equipment to make my photos look like those gorgeous and spectacular photos on so many food blogs. I just try my best with my Iphone and G10 camera :-)

A Little Bit of My Story

I grew up a chubby kid and ate whatever I liked, which was lots of everything. My nickname when I was a little girl was Little Fat Girl in my native language. Nope, didn’t particularly like it. So I’ve had weight issues since I can remember. Didn’t really get teased in my school years, which was nice, but I do remember constantly feeling very uncomfortable in my clothes ‘cos they were always tight and biting into me. Till now my reason for wanting to lose some weight is so I can feel comfortable in my clothes. And no, buying bigger size clothes is not always a good, healthy option, although as I age I’ve had no choice but to buy bigger sizes :-P

At age 19 I was already diagnosed with High Blood Pressure and landed in the hospital for 2 weeks for a number of tests. They couldn’t find out why I had high BP at such a young age and so concluded that it was hereditary. So I’ve been on daily meds since then. No fun, but quite necessary. I tried switching to a vegetarian diet, which I actually enjoyed and lost some weight, but because I was in the advertising industry at that time I didn’t watch the drinking, and so piled them back on again. And since meeting my now husband, the vegetarian diet is long gone, although I still enjoy vegetables more than meat. But we did eat all sorts of processed foods as well.

Then in 1998, our biggest family history nightmare came true and my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I somehow took it on like it was a personal battle and fiercely researched nutrition to try to combat it. I would say that was when it started changing for me. Learnt a lot about what is good to eat and what is bad. We fought so hard with treatment and good nutrition but unfortunately my dad passed away after 1 ½ years.

I remember telling my husband before we got married, “don’t expect me to be a domestic goddess whipping out meals very night” to which he said ok. Why not, since his mum is the much better cook anyway. Didn’t do much cooking since we ate at mum’s about 3 times a week but I did find that I enjoyed cooking and that we enjoyed throwing dinner parties.

But it was since moving to Australia six years ago and being exposed to more information on Food Health and having access to such amazing fresh produce, I have now become somewhat of a domestic queen and completely love cooking! I am a stay home mum to two school going kids and I believe that home cooking is always better than commercial food in terms of nutrition, value and in most times even taste! I have seen how my children have grown out of their food intolerances since I’ve switched our diet to mostly real, natural and wholesome food. I also believe anyone can learn to cook so they can eat better and healthier.

So Maggie’s Kitchen is where I feed my family to wellness, as well as my creative playground where I get to try new recipes, take food pictures and write about them. I’m not a gourmet chef nor am I a particularly good photographer. Just doing what I love to do  I’d also humbly like to, if I may, share my thoughts on Food Health and Wellness and make some of my home cooking available and hopefully be able to help those who may want to eat better but may struggle with cooking or are time poor.

If you visit my blog from time to time you will find Cookbook Reviews, Recipes, Favourite Finds  from my shopping trips, and practical tips on meal planning, shopping, cooking and such. I’d also like to be relevant to the community’s needs and will be on a lookout on how Maggie’s Kitchen can contribute to make this world a better place. And sometimes I’ll just throw in stories of one of my other passions – Dance!

So come join me as we explore and enjoy home cooking together.
