Fairy Themed Cupcakes

I LOVE to bake!

So last weekend I was asked to supply 24 cupcakes for a little girl's fairy themed party. I thought, wow that would be fun! I imagine bright colours and pretty girlie things. So I started thinking of fairy elements - little fairies or pixies, fairy dust, magic wand, garden, flowers, butterflies, and of course lots of pink! The brief was also for chocolate cupcakes, and half of them gluten free. No problem.
I planned for 3 designs - 3 colours, with 3 different fairy elements. First choice pink of course, and purple and green. Tinkerbell colours.

I used green for a garden design, piped green buttercream frosting into little stars and all together, they looked like grass :-). I then put pretty little flowers on the grass, and a pretty little edible wafer butterfly by the flower. Simple, and very pretty.

With purple buttercream I piped a rosette on the cupcake and placed a wand on top. The easiest homemade magic wand I could think of was to melt white chocolate and pipe them into wands. To prettify it more, I sprinkled lots of edible white glitter. There's your fairy dust!

I reserved the pink for the main theme - fairies. Because I was just using simple toppers, I decided to go a little different with the frosting. Instead of a plain pink frosting, I decided to use two tones for the frosting colour. I kept half the frosting a plain vanilla buttercream, whilst the other half I tinted it pink. Place both the halves in a piping bag and pipe away. There is literally a very neat trick to attempting the multiple tone frosting which I will share in my Helpful Tips page another time. Otherwise, it can be a pretty messy job. So pipe away and then simply top with a fairy topper. Simple, but visually pretty stunning.
So there it is. I hope the little girls liked them. I sure had fun making them. Please let me know if you'd like recipes for these cupcakes.
